Aditional Information
Although we are collectively changing the course of the pandemic, there are still a lot of people who have many doubts and questions related with the PCR test, due to the new information updates that come up every few weeks.
Therefore, we have decided to gather the most frequent asked questions related with the Coronavirud and the PCR tests.
The FDA explains that antigen tests are very specific for the virus, but are not as sensitive as PCR tests. «This means that positive antigen test results are very accurate, but there is a high probability of false negatives, so a negative result does not rule out infection.»
The FDA maintains that it is necessary to confirm negative antigen test results with a PCR test before making any treatment decisions or to prevent the possible spread of the virus due to a false negative.
Our PCR test is the most effective on the market with 99.9% reliability and specificity, so a positive result means you should contact your healthcare facility immediately.
The name comes from the acronym Coronavirus disease 2019. The OMS was the responsible of announcing, on February 11th 2020, that COVID-19 would be the name of this disease. The virus that causes this illness recieves the name of SARS-CoV-2, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.
The PCR test detects the presence of genetic material related to the virus SARS-CoV-2. It’s a test that replicates the genome of the virus, thanks to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which allows the detection of a pathogen’s genetic material. The PCR test detects the coronavirus on the early stages of the infectious process, without depending on the development of symptoms, or lack thereof, which is the case of asymptomatic people. To make this test it is necessary to collect a sample of the nasal portion of pharynx -nasopharynx-with a cotton swab, to subsequently analyze it on a laboratory.
A PCR test takes care of detecting the virus’ genetic material and turns out positive in the first stages of the disease: this stage encompasses the incubation process until the disappearance of the symptoms. If the result of a PCR test comes out negative, could be for two scenarios: on one side, it is possible that you haven’t caught the virus and on the other side, you could’ve overcome it.
The PCR test we conduct in Instituto Médico Madrid has a 99,9% of reliability. In our laboratory we are in charge of detecting 3 specific regions of the viral ARN: ORF1 ab, S (Spike) protein and N (Nucleocapsid) protein. Other laboratories only detect 1 or 2 regions of the ARN to spare time and costs, resulting in less accurate tests.
The results of our Standard PCR tests will be delivered the following day at approximately 18:00.
For the Urgent PCR service, results will be delivered the following day at approximately 12:00.
The results within the indicated timeframe may vary depending on the workload, the volume of tests and for reasons beyond Iberitest’s control.
The PCR test can detect the presence of the virus; the antibody detection test cannot. Other types of tests, like the quick antibody test, are not responsible for detecting the virus itself, only the immune reaction our organism generates to fight the coronavirus. It’s an indirect test of the activity or the overcoming of the disease.
ARN is the acronym that refers to the ribonucleic acid. The ribonucleic acid is found in the synthesis of the proteins and its function is as a messenger of genetic information of the DNA, the only genetic material of some viruses, which is the case of the ARN.
